I see painting as both a way of expressing the world and moments in time and then as the vehicle of sharing those discoveries with others. Painting is my life. Through this unique language of painting, I can say things that are impossible with words and reflect aspects of God’s creativeness. What makes a subject attractive to me is the “light” and color. The beauty of a young girl, the character of a tropical landscape, the solitude of a water reflection, or even the story and mystery behind someone or something makes the painting unique.
Biography
Darrell Hill, owner, operator and resident artist of the Country Frame Shop Gallery in Holualoa Hawaii, paints in a style that expresses the joy and spontaneity of island life. His use of color has been described as "courageous," and whatever subject he paints, he enters into the work with enthusiasm and abandonment.
Hill graduated from the Santa Barbara Institute of Art and has taught art at colleges in California, Arkansas and Hawaii. For eighteen years he was the creative director of a publishing company, leading a large staff of artists, writers and support personnel.
Influenced by the works of Sargent, Monet, Van Gogh and Gauguin, Darrell’s distinct bold impressionist painting style has emerged over the past few years as he has given himself to exploring and enjoying his gift.
In addition to his beautiful work in oil, Hill also works in watercolor and drawing. He is the past President of the Holualoa Foundation for Art and Culture and served as Vice President Creative Director for a major publishing company for 18 years. Currently, Darrell and his wife Pat, also an artist, live in Hawaii.
