Steven Main’s designs are created by laying out hand pulled cane (small glass rods) in a mosaic-like pattern. They are placed onto a sheet of steel called a marver, which is heated so that the cane design can be brought up to the same temperature as the glass on the blowpipe. After that, the pipe is rolled across the hot steel marver, picking up the design onto a core of colored glass. Several more layers of clear glass are then gathered from the furnace onto the piece, after which it is blown out and formed.

Steven’s work reflects his interest in the patterns found in nature, like striations in rocks and the visual rhythms of plants. Although he has a specific reference in mind when he creates his surface designs, he enjoys that people form their own interpretations of what they see in his work. What is important is to stimulate the imagination.

Lynch’s recent focus has been on one-of-a-kind pieces. She explores the different ways of changing the appearance of the metal through roller printing, and hammering the metal against textured surfaces. The combination of gems and earthier stones with 22k gold and silver provides the context for interplay of color, shape and texture. Wearability is always an important factor for Lynch. She wants her jewelry to be comfortable and graceful as well as strong and sculptural. Her jewelry reflects classical and primitive traditions while remaining distinctly contemporary. This artist makes jewelry for women to wear today… and tomorrow.
