Tim Rose is an artist who has perfected his craft for more than thirty years. In addition to teaching mobile-making to children and adults, he has written booklets, developed kits, and produced videos on that subject. He’s willing to share the fun of creating mobiles with everyone.

Timothy found his passion from studying the work of Alexander Calder. Calder would look at his friends’ paintings and interpret the composition as sculpture. He introduced composition as sculpture. He introduced movement to sculpture, thus creating the mobile. Calder’s background in engineering served as a reference to the rhythm in his mobiles and the counter-balance of weights that creates the movement.

Timothy begins his mobiles as drawings or paintings, and some paintings can inspire more than one mobile. The actual mobiles are simply 3-D line drawings in space. If you stand under one and look up, you will see the shapes that are reflected in the original painting. Timothy’s lofty warehouse studio serves as the perfect environment for the creation of sculpture in space. Under one roof, it seems as if the mobiles are alive, talking to one another as they reach across the ceiling.

The essence of the mobile is movement. This is the articulation of one piece causing the movement of another piece, much like the human body—the finger is connected to the wrist, is connected to the elbow, is connected to the shoulder.

Timothy’s work reflects his life as an optimist and as someone who is always active. He studied figure drawing for many years, never seeing the same thing twice. Now he strives to capture the essence of change in the mobile. Even in the morning or the evening, you behold a different work of art.
