Tim Coleman
The desire to work with my hands goes back to childhood. Building tree houses, building go karts and bicycles, or busy in my basement woodshop, I followed a natural instinct to create, always using my hands.

A move to Seattle in 1985 introduced me to the world of hand made furniture. I met and worked alongside makers working in styles that ranged from traditional to sculptural. I spent a year and a half as an apprentice and soaked up all that I could from the talented artists around me.

While in Seattle I was also introduced to master woodworker and author James Krenov and his program in fine woodworking at the College of the Redwoods in Fort Bragg, CA. I spent two years at the college refining my hand skills and learning from Krenov a creative approach that relies heavily on the maker's intuition.

My furniture is both functional and sculptural. It is described as poetic, graceful, and exquisitely detailed. I have a solid foundation in classical furniture making and design, but I enjoy experimenting with forms, patterns and textures to create unique contemporary pieces.

I frequently use marquetry, parquetry, thick veneer tiles, low relief carving and embossing to create richly textured and patterned surfaces. I am inspired by the decorative pattern work and aesthetics of cultures around the world, particularly from the Middle and Far East.
